I’m confused

I was watching the scrolling bar across the bottom of the tv screen while the news was on this morning and I noticed that a man got an 18 year jail sentence for killing his ex-girlfriend. Then shortly after, it read that a woman got a 30 year sentence for poisoning her husband.

I can’t understand the legal system. The man that got poisoned is still alive, granted he was in a coma for 4 days and is now blind.  But he is still alive. A woman got killed by her ex-boyfriend. She has had her life cut short.

I can’t understand the obvious difference in years of sentence. Does a woman deserve more time inside than a man for committing crimes?
